Predictable endings are plaguing the creative world- books, movies and even songs. Everything seems to be going along a pattern, but I for one would love to see that pattern broken. It wasn't very long ago when I would be shocked by book and movie endings, but no more. Let's attempt to do better at keeping the reader or viewer guess, shall we?

As an author, your job can get easier with time. As we write, we gain much needed experience. Our failures mesh together perfectly with our successes to teach us how to promote and touch our readership. And we learn the funniest lessons. We learn that two books on identical subjects may not actually appeal to identical readers because our styles adjust during our careers. As we grow and evolve, so does our writing. But sometimes, we can become lazy and insensitive and that spells trouble.

There are some authors who will only ever write a book and maybe a few articles, but this article is for those of us who write as a way of life. Most of us will be writing for the rest of our lives due in part to the stories and circumstances that beg our attention and ask us or even pester us to write about this or that. We keep living and learning and the teacher in us or entertainer in us keep us wanting to share. Therefore, the day we die, we'll probably die with some work or other in progress. That is why I am writing this article.

The written word has a power not wielded by anything else, and matched by very few things. No matter how much technology advances, there will never be a replacement for what is written. How we read, when we read and where we read may change, but the fact that we read will not change. Therefore, it behooves us to be responsible with what we share with the world. We never know if something we write will become a part of history thirty years or 100 years into the future. Please wield your pen and fingers responsibly!

Christian Books

I won't lie and pretend that I never read anything other than wholesome books. There is a lure to reading suspense, romance and paranormal books, at least for me. Still, I try to keep these kind of books to a minimum because I've found the more I read them, the more I want to read them.

The term Christian is now being applied to all kinds of crud because the name Jesus or God is mentioned a few more than 2-3 times. Hogwash! I like when publishers and authors call their books just what they are and let me make up my own mind about whether I want it or not.

Anyway, I said all of that to say that all next week I will be reading books by my Facebook friends. Some of them won't be Christian and thus when I post my review here, I'm going to be honest and fair, so the next couple of weeks may not show up too many Christian books. We'll see how it goes.

Cowboy for a Rainy Afternoon by Stephen Bly

CHAPTER 1

The Matador Hotel died on July 5^th, 1965, but they didn’t bother burying it until last fall.

New Mexico heat blanketed Albuquerque that July like too many covers in a stuffy cabin. The kind of day that you sweat from the inside out and feel sticky dirt in places that you don’t ponder much except in the shower. I reckon that four-bladed overhead fan that squeaked like an unfed cat failed to console Shorty McGuire. Doc Boyce said he passed on durin’ the night, but no one discerned it until they observed the empty back table at the Round-Up Café. For the last nineteen years of his life, Shorty lived in a second-floor room at The Matador. At straight up 6:00 a.m. ever’ mornin’ he ate two eggs fried hard under the faded picture of Theodore Roosevelt leading the Rough Riders up San Juan Hill.

As a boy, I calculated that Shorty McGuire and the others must be pushing a hundred-years-old when I met them for the first time in 1954. I reckon I surmised wrong. The Albuquerque Herald reported that Hadley (Shorty) McGuire was only 86 when he died on that July day in 1965. The Herald is right most of the time. As the last of that bunch at the Matador, there was no one left to take his trapings, so Whip Johnson and me cleaned out Shorty’s goods a few days after his funeral. Whip managed the hotel in the 60s for his Uncle Durwood Johnson who gained some fame in the Southwest on the rodeo circuit after the war. He won the hotel on a bet on a black half-thoroughbred stallion down in Magdalena.

The floor of Shorty’s little room with one four-pane slide-up window was carpeted solid with six to eight inches of newspapers, not a one newer than 1939. He claimed that cowboyin’ didn’t provide the time to read much, so he saved them for his retirement. I never did know if he got caught up. We didn’t have the nerve to give his tattered clothing to the Rescue Mission, so we chucked them into the hotel incinerator. We crated his boots, wooly chaps and battered Stetson, then donated them to the state museum. I had a notion they would want to display the gear of an old-time cowboy. But they stored them in a back room for a few years, then sold them at an auction to raise money for a modern art statue that looks like the scrap-iron pile out behind my barn. If I’d known they were selling Shorty’s belongings, I’d have bought those suckers myself and buried them, rather than let some car dealer in Denver drive off with ‘em. But that’s the way the past is. You can’t hang on to it all. What survives gets stolen by strangers who have no blasted idea of what they hold in their hands.

The tobacco-stained furniture in Shorty’s room belonged to the hotel, but Whip decided to replace it all and re-carpet. So they moved in newer furniture, but I don’t think the room was ever repainted. Whip and me always thought that room smelled like Lordsburg, but that might be its location on the south side of the hotel, facing the Santa Fe tracks. I never went back to the hotel after that day. The hippies ran it in the early 70s, then some drug dealers. I think one of them big moving companies bought the place and used it for storage for a decade or two before they tore it down last year. All them red bricks got shipped to the west side for deluxe estate fencing around an upscale gated community. I hear they decided to build urban condos on the old hotel site for rich city folks, but I can’t figure what kind of people would want to live in downtown Albuquerque. At least, not nowadays.

I still have Shorty’s rim-fire saddle hangin’ in my tack room. It was one of the first ones Estaban Chavez built, when he still had that shop behind the Chinese laundry in Las Cruces. Lots of folks have wanted to buy it over the years, but it doesn’t belong to me. Some day Shorty’s kin will show up wantin’ his things, and I’ll have it ready. I keep the leather oiled. Shorty died almost forty years ago, but I’ll hang onto it for him.That’s the way things are done around this part of the country. It’s one of the lessons I learned in the lobby of the Matador Hotel.

Time and Perseverance

So many authors fall through the cracks with great books because they have not yet decided what part of their message in each book is the strongest. Your book can't be about everything for everybody. It has to be about something specific to speak to a specific audience. Otherwise, it meets with a "blah, blah, blah" attitude from readers and no one will take you or your book seriously.

I love reading from unknown authors but it takes more than a feature from me and a few other bloggers for someone to notice you and take you seriously. Marketing your book is marketing your message and that takes time and perseverance.

From the inside out....That’s what you have to do - cleanse from the inside out. To spiritually cleanse is a renewing process that will give you a brand new life. It will give you enlightenment, satisfaction, and a new energy you never knew you had. You will be renewed, refreshed, and rejuvenated.

Simply put, if you don’t cleanse yourself from the inside out, then you are setting yourself up for failure no matter what. The hidden shadows that you have locked deep away are still working their damage on the inside and that portrays itself on the outside. You will always sabotage your intentions without even realizing it. It’s called self-sabotage and thousands of people do it on a daily basis. I don’t care how good your intentions are, nothing will come of them because you will undoubtedly sabotage them. Period.

The Bible says in Psalm 51:10, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” See? Even God says if you don’t change the inside, the outside won’t change. If you’re constantly feeding yourself garbage, then garbage is what is going to come out. If you let your shadows’ faces (fear, resentment, jealousy, angry, rage, envy, etc.) constantly haunt you that is what is going to be portrayed in your actions.

You need to identify the inner garbage that is hindering your life and you need to clean it up. It needs to be cleared out and thrown away for good for change to take effect. You have to put your pride aside, get your ego in check, and surrender your fears, your self-limiting beliefs, your self-centered will, and your “all about me” attitude.

Many bloggers who do not write anything else sometimes mistakenly believe they are not writers. Writers come in many forms and shapes. Not every writer pens articles for newspapers and magazines. All of them don't do educational material. All don't write books. But the one thing they all have in common, blog, author, freelancer journalist, is they work with words daily. Those words are then later read by someone else, even if that someone is just family members.

I take great pride in my writing here on my blog. Maybe I'll get to doing my children's book one day or maybe not, but I know that I write well and I don't have to publish a book to prove I am a writer/author.

Lacresha's Motivational Moment - LOOK AHEAD

One of the hardest things to do today in the entertainment industry is to look ahead. None of us has as much foresight as we'd like to have, but we all have some.

When you're writing, it is your responsibility to look ahead of you to see what children in later generations will see, to feel how they may feel, and to try to interpret your work they way they will. I know it isn't easy to have an imagination free from all restraints but still find the restraint of Christianity there. I know it gets even harder when we see other professing Christians write, sing and do whatever they want to do and still feel comfortable saying they serve God. But, the rewards of faithfulness are many. Don't give up on writing inspirational stuff for the Lord and to help others. Stay strong in your convictions and soon your payday will arrive! Remember who you are and who you belong to.

Today, I am pleased to have Lacresha Hayes here with me on my blog. I've interviewed her before, but this is definitely my favorite interview to date. I look forward to your comments.

Me: Lacresha, we're happy to have you back over. Anything new with your writing career?

L.H: Thanks for featuring me, Kim. Actually, a lot has changed since I was here last. I just recently released my first exclusive Amazon Kindle ebook, TANGLED: LOVE CAN BE FOUND IN STRANGE PLACES. I have been writing more fiction recently with real life issues handled in various ways. I still try to make sure God gets the glory in the end.

Me: How has getting into fiction changed your writing?

L.H: With fiction, you can expand upon your own life experiences and those of the people around you and build a whole plot that readers can relate to. It's more about imagination, but the difficulty is in keeping it centered when you're Christian. In real life, people cuss, have pre-marital sex, fight, argue, etc. You have to have that in your book, but it has to be done in a way that doesn't offend your Christian audience. It's growing me up in my writing.

Me: What was your first work of fiction?

L.H: RAW REDEMPTION was my first official work of fiction. I'm extremely pleased with it. I didn't know how well it'd turn out, but I didn't venture far from home. The book is about a sexually abused woman who runs as far and as fast as she can, but then is forced to return home to her secrets. I've gotten a lot of great reviews for the book and that has encouraged me to do more with my fictional writing.

Me: Does your writing ever conflict with your own values as a Christian? As a mother? As a wife?

L.H: Sure it does. Sometimes, my characters make decisions I would not have made personally. Other times, there's so much of me in the character that those around me instantly can relate the character to me. There are times when I write about things that are difficult to read about/hear about. I believe any writer is going to come to a place where they feel conflicted if they are truly trying to make a difference with their writing.

Me: Finally, what advice do you have for others who write fiction and nonfiction, Christian or otherwise?

L.H: The first piece of advice is to make sure whatever you are writing is something you want to write. It's hard to write when you don't want to do it. The second piece of advice is to write what you know well or don't mind researching. You want your books to be sound in information. Lastly, I'd tell authors to make sure they spend time on their craft. Spend a lot of time reading other authors in your genre. Read books on writing. Re-read your own works, particularly as you write and publish more works. Encourage yourself by seeing how much you are growing from article to article, book to book.

Writers Versus Authors

There's this school of thought that writers are those who write, whether published or not. Authors are those who have signed contracts with publishers to produce a book.

Within the category of writers, you have freelancers and staffers. In fact, there are so many kinds of writers and authors that we can get lost in definition. To me, the qualifications for writers and/or authors are not so strict. If you have a book, self-published or traditionally published, you are an author. If you write regularly, whether it be blogging, articles, research pieces, etc, then you are a writer.

Just My One Voice and One Opinion

As a reader, I'm just one person with one voice concerning books, blogs, authors and their influence in the world. I believe in being honest, though, and I must say that even though last year saw us top and surpass one million books published, I am highly disappointed in quality.

Where are the originals? When one thing sells well, everyone else writes their interpretation of it as if we readers are only topic prone. Well, we're not. We want variety, originality, and heart. For me, I want authors who are not afraid to be different, to be bold, to make a statement and help change the mindsets of others.

Making Use of Facebook

I've never seen more authors than those who lurk around Facebook daily. But it doesn't help them to be there if they are not making full use of everything Facebook has to offer. For me, the reader, I have a wealth of info at my fingertips now because of FB. I can pop over to any author's page or profile and see what they are writing and take a peak at what others are saying about it before I buy.

I recently met a great group of women and one comes to mind, Nichole Gibbons Osborn. She's a writer, blogger and soon-to-be author. I also had the pleasure to befriend Janet Chester Bly, an awesome writer, and to become closer to Joyce Sterling Scarbrough. Other great writers I've met there are Lee Ann Ward, Linda Kozar, Julie Malone, and Tricia Goyer.

I'm making good use of Facebook, getting close to the authors I read everyday, and posting to further the kingdom of God. What could be better?

As an author, what is your great responsibility? Some say to provide entertainment. If that is the case, you are missing the biggest picture. You are missing the point of the power of the wielding the pen.

As a pen-wielder, your biggest responsibility should be social reform, education and then entertainment. A true author can master them all flawlessly. Those are the ones I love to read. I want a book that can make me cry, make me angry, make me smile and call me to action. Maybe I'm alone in this regard.

Bookstores in Jeopardy

I am so much like the movie, You've Got Mail. I love books. More importantly, I love bookstores. I remember going to various ones every weekend as a child. It was a family outing for us. I got a new book every weekend. We'd spend hours browsing through books because my mom so desired to be an author. Bookstores became a huge part of my life.

Now with online giants like Amazon selling books at deep discounts, the chains are even suffering, let alone the small independents that has all the history and knowledge. I encourage you to stop by your bookstore today and support them with a purchase of at least $20, even if you are sacrificing your Starbuck's money.

I personally love it. It's as easy on the eyes as a regular book versus the harshness of most backlit electronic devices. If you have the extra hundreds lying around, then invest in one, particularly if you are a veracious reader like I am.

When you write as an author, think about who will read it. Think about what it says to them today and what it will say to them in the future. Think about whether it is something you'd want your child to read or live by. You have the power, the power of the pen. Wield it wisely.

What's Happening to BOOKS?

When I was growing up, my parents made me read. I had to bring my work home from school and complete every bit of it. When it came to those dull stories in those thick literature books, I hated to do them. Even so, mom made me read them until they spoke to me through my prejudice. I wanted something exciting and fun, not dull and lifeless as I assumed most of these stories were.

Now, I see children who tell me they've never completed even one book. Children now go online and get cliff notes, etc to complete their literature assignments. They'd rather do iPods and iPhones, but not books. It's a tragedy if we allow this to happen.

Books must survive this digital age, else will we lose a major part of our history and culture. Whether print or digital books, our children should be made to read. Reading expands the imagination, broadens horizons and can shape and mold good character. Don't allow books to die. Even if you don't care to read, make book purchases a part of your monthly budget and reading a part of your weekly schedule. Do it for the sake of a culture that is trying to sweep our children into a whirlwind of lifeless living.

I'm very happy to announce my interview with Lacresha Hayes, a publishing, pastoring, grantwriting, parenting, social reform maven. This woman is so anointed and special. I enjoy any chance I get to be a blessing to her. I think you'll find this interview to be a very special one.

Me: Hi, Lacresha. I'm glad you brought your tour to my blog. Give us an overview of your book.

L.H: Thanks, Kim. Raw Redemption is my first work of Christian fiction and it deals with issues of family secrets, incest and abuse, insecurities, fears and eventual healing and happiness. It deals with the issues of the heart. Since it has been on the market, several people have mentioned that I should do a Johansson family saga of books.

Me: In the book, Cheyenne has to overcoming losing both parents. She is molested by a wealthy but psychotic uncle. She goes through a bad marriage. She ends up pregnant. Are those the major themes of the book?

L.H: No. Actually, those are more like the issues she has to overcome. The primary theme is healing. I chose the death of the parents and molestation by an uncle as trials because those are some of the worst imaginable situations. Cheyenne beat them in the end, which is to signify that people can overcome any challenge with faith. Divorce is common place, and so is accidental pregnancies. I wanted her to be a real person and thus these trials made her someone anyone could relate to.

Me: This book has some highly sensationalized parts. What was the purpose in that?

L.H: When I read, I read for knowledge or entertainment. I knew I needed some pieces that were not as common and not as likely to happen to most people. Therefore, I used her inheritance and the family's secrets to make the book more entertaining without losing it's believable factor. Who doesn't want to dream? That's why I used what I used.

Me: Who do you think will enjoy this book most?

L.H: Young women, definitely, though there is much in there to attract men too. It's not for children.

Me: Do you have any other writing in the works?

L.H: Definitely! I have finished The Snare of a Strange Woman and Black Dakota is being edited. Snare is about the perils of sexual infidelity and is mostly aimed at ministers and leaders. Black Dakota is another work of fiction and is a Christian thriller. I look forward to both of these books hitting shelves before Christmas. I'm also writing and editing my entrepreneur series of books. I'm not sure any of them will see the market this year, though. I'll have to keep you all posted.

Okay, so we all know that those are the powerhouses of online book sales. Seems BN is trying to compete with Amazon, but there's no stopping the super power. Amazon has a hand in publishing, distribution, printing, and secondary sales sources. There's books, downloads and movies. There's jewelry, electronics, and much more.

I've honestly began buying most of my books through Powell's and Diesel for my ebooks. However, I find myself on Amazon's website daily while BN is rarely ever a stop for me. How about you? Which do you prefer?

Releasing Your Inner Story

Most people have an imagination. Most of us can sit down and tell a story. Writing a story is not as easy, but with modern technology, even the worst writers can find themselves in print with a bestseller. With the popularity of ghostwriters increasing, many people are getting to see their names on the cover of a professionally published book.

Over the past two weeks, I've been outlining and brainstorming. I want to begin writing short stories to feature right here on my blog. I will keep everyone updated as I work on releasing my inner story. In the mean while, maybe you should consider what muse lives inside of you.

Just yesterday, I finally received my Michelle Sutton book, It's Not About Me. I ordered her book after she came highly recommended by several members of our book club. While I haven't finished it yet, I'm very pleased to say I have researched her and am very impressed with what I see.

Christian fiction is a booming genre, but often not appreciated as much as it should be. It can be just as effective at lessons and is often more effective at witnessing. Michelle's fiction has been talked about all over Goodreads and LibraryThing, as well as several Ning groups. If you haven't read her work, I suggest you grab up a copy and start reading.

Interview with John Hyde, author of "What's the Problem with Jesus?"

John Hyde is the kind of man that inspires nations and generations with his integrity to Christ. I've read his book, What's the Problem with Jesus?, and I can tell you that he has truly tapped into some of the most challenging questions that hinder people from coming to Christ. Please, take your time to read and respond to this interview. This one is powerful!

1. John, could you tell my readers a bit about yourself?

I'm on the downhill side of life, most likely, unless I live to 120, then I'm halfway there! I experienced a severe attack from a deer over 3 years ago that almost took my life, 19 wounds, legs and arms pierced completely through, chest ripped open, holes everywhere. I have not and will not fully recover. But, it started me on another tangent to life.

I graduated from Texas A&M in 1972, taught Vo. Ag. a bit, then with to the Air Force, where I flew for six years. I completed my service, and shortly thereafter, God called me into the Christian Camping ministry, where I've been for nearly 30 years now. I'm serving in my fifth camp, been here 13 years, and have built most of it from scratch myself. The first year it was opened, 450 attended. Last year, 8500 came through. I am the only staff, but am praying that will soon change.

I have seen thousands of kids (and many adults) come to Christ while at camp. The atmosphere is truly unique. You are separated from the world for a while, no distractions, surrounded by friends who love God, and when the mix of music, worship, teaching, fun all comes together, lives are changed.

I hope to make just a few more years to get this camp, Messiah's Ranch Christian Camp, up to a certain point. Right now, I am constructing a new dining hall and kitchen. It will have a school bus within it as a mini-diner, a tree or two, cascading waterfall, whatever else I dream up.

My wife, Lydia, and I have been married 35 years, we have four grown children from 19 to 32, two grand daughters, 4 and 2. My wife is very involved as events planner for the Chancellor of the Texas A&M System.

2. What is your writing inspiration? And, how has your life experiences enhanced it?

My father always wanted to write, dabbled with it a bit, wrote many short stories, but could never quite take the step of trying to get something published. I determined years ago that I would write "someday", and would follow through. That "someday" came as I was healing from the attack, thinking about how precious and short life is, and how I could somehow sum up all I live for and thereby inspire others to seek the truth of Jesus Christ. My many experiences in life will serve me well as I write, hopefully, much more. In fact, there have been many brushes with death, but the deer was by far the most severe. Out of those close calls, I have come to understand well how God indwells us and sees us through.

3. Tell us about What's the Problem with Jesus.

I wrote What's The Problem With Jesus? in an effort to simplify the gospel as much as possible, and to appeal to the millions of empty hearts that have perhaps flirted with the idea of following Christ, but always seem to come up with some kind of excuse so as not to. And, there is so much misunderstanding about who Jesus really is and what His mission was while He was here. We're not much different than the people who were with Christ, yet rejected Him. I wrote the book in a conversational, almost in-your-face style, yet gentle enough so as not to scare the reader off. The idea was to confront the reader with their need to make their choice now while there was still time.

4. What do you think readers will gain from reading this book?

Hopefully, readers will gain eternal life after reading the book. That's the main objective, I think, of any writing that attempts to point people to Christ, wouldn't you think? I know that we live in very challenging times. I have seen such a decline in our country over my short life. People are searching for answers and coming up empty. The answers are right in front of them, but they choose not to see. Generally, a major crisis in one's life will eventually drive someone to come to terms with their mortality. I want them to experience the fullness of life all along the way after they have made that step of following Christ. I hope the book will inspire Christians to give it to their lost friends. I've already seen that the book has confronted a few Christians with what they thought they believed. As I said, I tried to make it so simple that the message is impossible to miss.

5. Are there any other literary works coming up in the near future?

I have many books swimming in my head, all waiting for me to sit down and get started. The demands of running a camp alone are much more daunting than anyone could possibly understand, so time to write is scarce. If I can ever find the right help at camp, I can write more. My next book will likely be about the Church, Lord knows how messed up it has become and is the reason so many people won't accept Jesus. Then I will likely start one that is staunchly about life, directed at those who accept abortion as no big deal. The rest I will save for now, but I think there are about 8 books at the moment.

6. What advice do you have for other authors?

Advice for other authors? Like I know a lot about being one?? Well, mostly I would say that people need the truth more than ever. Fiction and fantasy reading is ok to pass the time, but does it change one's heart? That's all I want to do is point people to the One who will change their hearts forever. I used to read a great deal in my early Christian years, seeking to grow into a mature Christian. The older I get, the more I realize I don't yet know. The mysteries of God are unfathomable, but worthy of our pursuit.

7. Please give us purchasing information.

The book is currently at Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, a few other places I'm not sure of. It came out in January, I am learning how to market it, and it's not easy when you are not an established author. But I did notice recently that the book went from something like 1,655,000th place on Amazon to 840,000. But maybe that's because I purchased 50 books to give away in marketing efforts.... I don't believe it is in any stores yet as it may be print-on-demand. I long to see it there some day soon!

Foolish Ideas Cover in the Clothing of "Literature"

I can't stand to get those books that are mostly propaganda. It irks my spirit and frustrates me to no end. It seems that some reviewers are actually fooled by these books and ascribe the title literature to them. It's nonsense and dangerous to our children's young, developing minds.

I actually read a book whose title I can't remember. The entire book was about why children should be allowed to have public fits and tantrums. The book was about self-expression. But, at the heart of the book was the idea of discipline. The propaganda was that children who are allowed to be themselves without too much parental restraint grow up to be more independent and more useful to society. I wanted to ask the author, "In what world?"

Please take time to read books your children are reading so that you can address silly teaching and the propaganda that they will undoubtedly bump into in this literary society called New York Times reviews. You review books for your own family. Just because some big wig gives a glowing review does not mean that the ideas expressed would meet your approval.

The Shack by William Young

While The Shack has met with many mixed reviews, the general consensus is that the book is pretty good. I finally got around to reading it and enjoyed every moment of it.

I think the weaker points of this book were the storyline could have been better developed, and the ending could have been better. Still, even with those issues, the book is worth a read and I think Christians should make a good faith effort to get a copy from the library or bookstore and read it.

The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren

I've read The Purpose Driven Life about five times now. I'm a big fan of Rick Warren material, even with his issues.

We recently did this book again at church in the new membership class. I enjoyed it thoroughly, especially the feedback from some of the new Christians. This book comes highly recommended by tons of pastors and I add my recommendation to theirs. This is a great starting and finishing place for believers.

Over the past three weeks, Tonya over at Living Waters Publishing Company has been constantly pestering me about actually sitting down and reading this book as soon as possible. I had so many others that I wanted to get into, but decided to see what all the fuss was about.

This book really put me on my toes. First of all, let's just say that the author didn't pull any punches. The book is straight-forward, common sense, logic about the truth behind this new age movement away from Jesus Christ. The theme throughout the entire book is basically a comparison with what we hold acceptable to what we find unacceptable about Jesus Christ. I passed the book along to another reviewer, hoping that I can do my part to spread the Word about probably one of the top ten books I've read in the past four years.

I wouldn't hesitate to get over to Amazon and order it now if I were you. I promise you an excellent read that will excite you and reignite your fire for Christ.

Denver's New Readers' Club

I love Colorado. I love the snow, the fairly mild summers. I love everything about this state, and particularly Denver. Still, in all the time I've been here, I couldn't find any reading groups. I searched high and low. Just when I'd given up hope, I got in on one that had become practically dormant over the last few years.

Last week, a new reader's group started at my church. It's called Eden's Reading Women. I love it. We've already met twice and most of us call each other daily just to see what's been read and if it had any biblical significance. If you're in the Denver area, check us out. Hopefully, we'll have a website soon. Praise the Lord for this wonderful gift!

The Twilight Series

Seems everyone is talking about Twilight. To my astonishment, some of my church sisters are even applauding the books. Of course, I refuse to actually purchase the books. I am very careful about where I put my money, but curiosity got the better of me and so I borrowed a copy from one of my sisters.

Now, the books are tintillating. Obviously, they would be. They are constantly ranking on the bestseller lists everywhere. Still, I was disturbed to know that my sisters that I pray and fellowship with at church every Sunday were not disturbed by the contents of the books. At some point, we have to make a stand. Of course, the book was entertaining, but there was a ton in it that was contrary to Christian standards, like most books in that particular genre. I don't fault the world for reading what they find entertaining. However, I do wonder how most Christians can stand firm against certain things, but then watch it and enjoy it in movies, books and magazines. I'm just wondering and looking at myself at the same time.

Though I've never read Chronicles of Narnia, I have the movies. I'm very impressed with them and plan to read the books eventually. The other day, I stumbled upon a group debating Christian Sci-fi and decided to join in. Needless to say, some felt that Christian material should be nonfiction only. Some debate that making up a lie (novel, etc) to represent Christ is an oxymoron. To those people, I say you're missing the point. Christians have a right to read both fiction and nonfiction without it taking them away from their beliefs. Therefore, I'm all for Christian genres expanding. In fact, I'm an avid reader of Christian Romance. Keep writing and hopefully we'll have more C.S. Lewis' pop up somewhere with spectacular stuff!

Leigh Laurence and Her Ebook, Uncommitment

I was nearly thrown aback by the cover. Luckily, I read over the synopsis first. Leigh Laurence, the syndicated relationship article writer, has now moved further out in the water into books. I got this download, Uncommitment: Dealing with a Predator, only two days ago. I was absolutely stunned by how deeply spiritual this book was without even mentioning spirituality much.

Leigh is a Christian, I found out, but she doesn't use it in her writing much. So, this book is really a treat. She pulled off a crossover book her first time out the gate. No easy feat!

Chaplain Daniel Langerock

When I first heard of Chaplain Dan, it was through a group we're both a part of ~ FCW. I was delighted by his news of having a publication contract.

Chaplain Dan has written several bible studies and some poetry journals, all due out this year. What's amazing about this author is his level of sacrifice. He lost his wife not long ago, but there's not even a hint of sadness about him. He's the picture of a man, a Christian, a Christian man and an author.

There are a lot of authors who write well. However, the special ones are those who can include a wonderful message in their writing. To me, writing without a message is just entertainment. I prefer television if I want entertainment only. I like hidden and blatant messages in books. I like to read things that can change my life, help me grow and more.

This month, I'd like to salute some of the authors whose books I've read, loved, learned from and changed with. The first and my favorite is Beth Moore. Lately she's been featured on Life Today with the Robinsons and she's dynamic. Secondly, I'd like to acknowledge Joyce Meyer who is equally anointed and dynamic.

Now, some of the others may not be as well known, but they are just as excellent. I've been watching Alton Gansky, Joyce Anthony and Marvin Wilson, Michelle Sutton, Lacresha Hayes and Lynn Austin, and many others. Their books are good and their messages are powerful. Some of them are hidden, some blatant, but always there. Support your local Christian authors because they are the lifeline of our beliefs, bringing us the things we need to excel in our walk.

An Alert! Children's Book for Dealing with Breast Cancer

Writing Powerful Words

My name is Jimmy H. Copeland III. My father is a retired Lt. Colonel and practicing psychologist in Virginia. My mother is a practicing social worker in Virginia. I'm married to Tiffany, who is a Independent Beauty Consultant and Freelance photographer. I have two girls, Essence and Trinity and a little one on the way. What was you inspiration behind Life is a Game?

While working in the prison system, I noticed how inmates and staff become desensitized to the violence all around them. It’s a normal day to see someone stabbed to death or to see 6 people kick a person in the head, arms, and torso repeatedly for 5-6 minutes at a time. Its normal for a person to run at the drop of a dime, to assist a staff member being assaulted 100 yards away. It is also normal to hear the ground shake underneath your feet because grenades are going off around you and shots of an M-16 shotgun are rattling your ear. In my job, it is easy to be plagued by fear. You have to be positive yet aware of your surroundings. My goal is to inspire people to take back control of their lives. You can use fear to make you stronger or fear can destroy your life. God has blessed me with a gift of exhortation. I love to encourage people and exhort people in achieving God’s best in their lives. I woke up one morning last fall, and started typing. It was like a flood being released within me. Thoughts and ideas came to my mind and I wrote them down as fast as I could.

What do you hope to accomplish with this book?

I pray people are exhorted and motivated to get up and be all that they can be. I hope that this book gets them on their feet in pursuit of their passions in life. My goal is for people to be encouraged and sharpen the tools (gifts and talents) that are within them. I long for people to stop looking down in their lives at all the problems and situations that surround them. We all will have problems and situations. The question is what are we going to do about them. Somethings in life we can’t change. However, we can reduce our anxieties and worry by not focusing on the things we can’t change but on the things we can. Our choices dictate our world. What choice will we make in life? I hope people regardless of where they are and what they are doing are motivated to make good choices that don’t simply help themselves but impact generations to come.

How did prayer play into the book?

I believe that God answers prayer. I also believe that God can use people to do his will. All He asks for is a willing vessel and obedient spirit. God laid this book on my heart, and I sought God on what to do and how to do it. To be honest, when I finished writing the book, I sought to simply print it out, self publish and give it away. I just wanted people to be blessed. A question was posed on why don’t I get it published, so I sent the manuscript out on the internet to publishing companies to see what happened. Living Waters Publishing Company liked the manuscript and agreed to work with me. It gave me joy to know that I was backed by a company who lifted me up in prayer and was equally dedicated to my vision and cause.

Do you have any other works in the making? Tell us about them.

Currently the book Life is a Game is almost finished with its revision. I pray that this revision touches even more lives and encourages people to maximize the passions of their life. The revision expounds on Life is a Game by exploring the different aspects of through segments called Winning Life’s Battles and Living Victoriously. Winning Life’s Battles explores the battles that we face in life and how to be victorious. It allows us to look at what kind of person we are and what is needed to be a champion. Living Victoriously will catapult the reader into I can and I will, versus I might, maybe, and I’ll try.This will all be in the revision.

I am also working on a piece called, Where’s the Love? It is a letter to the church. The design is not to condemn or judge, but for believers to do a self check. The Bible says to judge yourself. Sometimes in life we get so caught up in the world that we lose track of who we are really serving. The question is posed, "Do we really love God." I believe this book will be a dynamic life changer which will cause believers to get back to the basics within their faith and hopefully out of the snares of traditionalism and religion.

This book is for everyone, however, I have a special message for young people, teenagers and pre-teens alike. I do understand how hard it is to find yourself. I know how it feels to be forgotten. When I say losing myself, I mean I lost my identity. I was so busy trying to fit in that I became more like them for acceptance and less like me. I slowly began to see through negative and positive choices that all I need is within me, and all I have to do is to be myself. Being who God created me to be is all that is necessary for me to have joy and peace in my life. There is nothing wrong with being an individual. All great men and women in the past had to stand alone for a season. After standing alone, people gravitated to them. People gravitate to strong people because they have something that they need. You have what they need, so be that trendsetter and strong person.

Inspirational Interview with Sabriena Williams

I was very happy about this interview with Sabriena Williams, author of the upcoming book, Wait on the Lord, I Say Wait. She's a true inspiration to women and to Christians.

1) What inspired your latest work?

The inspiration behind Wait on the Lord, I Say Wait was my hasty decision to choose a mate for myself without waiting for God to send me the man he ordained for my life. In 2004, I was going through a period of loneliness and depression. I was struggling with low self-esteem and didn't know who I was in God. I had a strong desire to be married and fulfill my fleshy desire of being a bride. I thought that if I had a man, I would be complete. I thought the feelings of loneliness would subside, but it didn't. It got terribly worse. I took God's Word in Proverbs 18:22 lightly. "He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord"

In my search, I found someone who did not have the ability to make me whole. The lesson I learned was Jesus is the only man that can complete you. I was trying to cover some emotional wounds. I was trying to appear normal. I was trying to beat my biological clock. I was in a mode of wanting to please the flesh. As a result of me being disobedient to God, my marriage lasted only 8 months and the experience was really painful.

2) How do you expect this book to speak to the Christian population?

This book will speak loud and clear to the Christian community. This book deals with church issues, family issues, work issues and of course relationship issues. There is not one christian that won't be able to relate. I really would like the single christian woman to know that even though the spirit of loneliness and depression may try to suffocate her mind into believing that God had not heard her prayers for a mate, He has. Women have to realize that singleness is not a curse. It is a time to spend time with Christ and prepare for the ministry of marriage. This book will show the walk of faith. As a Christian, you have to be ready for a uphill faith walk.

3) Tell us about your writing process. What was the most difficult and what was the easiest?

I am a self-taught writer. I have been writing since grade school. As a child, I enjoyed writing short stories, plays and poetry. I'm not a classroom writer. I never took any creative writing classes or anything. My weakest areas are grammar, punctuation and all that technical writing stuff. Thank God for professional editors.

God gives me a clear vision when writing so the easiest for me is developing the characters, though it isn't always that easy to do. I can see each character come alive right before my eyes. This was my very first book published that included characters and I am very excited about that.

4) What role did prayer play in your writing?

I prayed through each and every chapter of the book. There were many times when I wanted to give up. I was struggling with developing the characters, but God continued to remind me that he was with me every step of the way. I also had praying friends and family that offered tremendous support. I'm now asking God to make provisions for this book to be placed in major bookstores all around this world. The word and vision God imparted into me for this book will be a blessing for all.
5) Is there a Christian witness in your book? If so, is it obvious or hidden?

There is definitely a witness in this book. She tries to live a godly life and share her love for Jesus with others on a daily basis. Throughout the book, she holds on to faith and prayer. In this book, you will see God move.

6) Tell our readers about the beauty of saving themselves for marriage.

The beauty of saving yourself for a God ordained marriage is the assurance that God will bless it. God gave marraige as a gift to Adam and Eve. They were created perfect for each other. Marriage is instituted by God. Anything that God creates has a purpose. The beauty of waiting for God to bless you is all the time you can devote to God basking in his marvelous glory.

As single Christian women, we have to position ourselves to be found. We have to get our spirtitual houses in order. We can't expect God to send us anything we aren't ready for. We have to let go of jealousy, cut the cord on selffishness, divorce pity and shame, release depression, bury that lust spirit, evict our past and press forward to the destined place God has ordained just for us. God hears your prayers and wants to bless you, but you must be ready. My advice to all is Wait on the Lord.

Everyone is talking about Barbara Walters

We are pleased to have Carol Jones here with us today. Ms. Jones is the author of Dare to Dream, published by Living Waters Publishing Company.

1. Ms. Jones, tell us a bit about yourself and why you became a writer.

Hi Kim, I'm a single mother of three sons-Jasmyn, Ryan and Langdon. Ryan was killed March 17, 2007. I have two grandchildren and am currently employed as a flight attendant. One day on my way home from work-when I was in one of my praise and worship modes-it came into my spirit to write a book. With encouragement from my sisters-I said yes God and sit down at the computer one day and begin to type. At a later time God spoke into my spirit-you should always be prepared to write because "you are a writer." The book project begin in June 2005 and was completed in November 2007.

2. What was your inspiration behind Dare to Dream?

Dare to Dream has definitely been a faith walk-being I knew absolutely nothing about writing a book. As a child I often dreamed because God gave the ability to each one of us to dream, but many are caught up and lost in how to make their dreams come true. Those people are the silent dreamers who don't dream out loud-only in secrecy. Through the word of God and in building a relationship with Him-not only is He bringing all my dreams into fruition-He goes a step further to tell me He will give me new dreams with new meanings,as He takes me into a new journey from glory to glory. God has made me fearsome and I am no longer afraid to dream and believe they will all come true through the knowledge of the word of God. He is no respecter of persons and what He has done for me, He will do for others as well.

4. Are there any other books on the horizon?

Yes, I am writing two books at this time. One is about the life and death of my son-Ryan. The other one is what God is inspiring me to write-another testimonial.

5. How does your family feel about you being a published author?

They feel it is great and they are very proud of me and what God is doing in my life. My two sons are very proud of me and my accomplishments. There was some doubt I would finish Dare to Dream after the death of my Ryan, but my sons encouraged me to write on a daily basis as well as others.

6. Has writing a book made a difference in your life?

Yes it has. In writing this book and through the word of God- I have also found purpose in Him-that I am a true writer fulfilloing one of the purposes He has for me in this lifetime.

7. Please share anything else you'd like the readers to know about you.

I am a child of God and I have come to truly realize this journey is not about me-it's all about Him-my Lord, God and Savior.

Lacresha Hayes, A Minister with a Message

As promised, today we have the pleasure of having Lacresha Hayes here on the blog with us. It was an honor for me to do this interview with her. It was difficult to find something new to ask about with all the detailed questions she's already covered on her blog tour. However, I came up with a few.

Q: Lacresha, so much has been said about you already. You're growing quite a sizable online following simply with your message. How does that make you feel?

A: Honestly, it feels good to be recognized, but I don't want the recognition to replace the message. I sincerely do this more for those who write me secretly with their pains than any others. I know how it feels to hurt silently and alone. I don't want any woman I can reach to go through that. So, it feels good, but I refuse to get caught up in it.

Q: Have you seen a spike in your book sales since your tour?

A: Yes! Book sales have risen sharply. I have book clubs and a few independent bookstores calling on me as we speak.

Q: What made you join RAINN?

A: Well, I researched them and learned all I could. They are really in the business of helping women heal, not just for money or recognition either. They are the largest organization of its kind. I also support other sexual abuse and domestic violence organizations, but RAINN provides various material that makes it easier to get the word out. I work with Katherine Hull and she's a jewel, truly sincere.

Q: Most people have avoided this question, and I know it's a sensitive topic still, but tell me more about when you stabbed your husband. Do you feel like this was a culmination of pain?

A: Actually, it was. I was a different person back then, a true product of my environment. I was afraid all the time. I never felt safe. I never felt secure. I felt as if I was all I had in the world. I was tired of being battered and mistreated so he got the full measure of what had been going on most of my life. I hate what I did to my ex-husband. I regret it all the time. Thankfully, he forgave me. Still, I don't condone violence of any kind. Some women have tried to make me out to be some kind of champion for standing up and fighting for myself, but a real champion would have walked away and never looked back. To me, that's a champion.

Q: You mention about sexual promiscuity and legal battles in your book, at least very briefly. Can you tell us more about that?

A: I didn't think anyone would ever get around to asking me about that. Normally, sexually abused victims do one of two things: they are very loose or they hate sex altogether. There are a lot of factors that go in with that, but these are the basic two things that happen when someone is repeatedly abused. For me, I was so tired of the tearing and ripping and pain, I felt that giving it away was easier than having it taken from me. So, I created a habit of saying yes. Most of the sex I've had in my life can be attributed to something I didn't want to do, but did anyway, either for love or for safety. It took years for me to get over that.

The legal battles have been something I've not discussed much, but I am in the process of writing a book about them entitled Justified. Still, I can touch on some of it. When I was a teenager, I was very rebellious (like that's something new). I ran away from home all the time. I had the most wonderful probation officer at the time named Mr. Ripley. Anyway, I was sent away to a girl's home. That was the beginning. I ran away, skipped school, stole petty items like food, lipstick and deodorant. But, the older I got, the more the issues escalated. I got into trouble when my grandmother died. No one had the money to bury her and her funeral was put off twice. So, when her Social Security checks showed up, I cashed them and paid for her funeral expenses. I didn't think it would get me into trouble since I didn't spend any of it, save maybe $8. But, it did. So, I had officially become a felon for theft of property. By age 21, I'd been in trouble repeatedly for fighting and other smaller misdemeanors. Then, there was the lack of self-control with my first checkbook. I didn't write things down like I should have. I didn't balance things like I should have. That brought on hot check charges. It was an ugly childhood and young adulthood for me. It seemed like as soon as I got one thing straightened out, three others would get messed up again. It took years for me to break that cycle too. In fact, it took God because I stayed in and out of trouble until I got saved. But, the things you do before salvation still has to be paid for afterwards, for the most part.

Q: Sounds like you grew up in poverty.

A: I did. My grandmother was illiterate. She could barely sign her name. I was really smart, but we were on welfare. Part of the reason the abuse lasted so long in my case was that the abuser was one of the only people who supported our family when we ran out of money, which was all the time. I was raised the majority of my life on $162 a month and food stamps. It created this insatiable hunger in me to succeed, but I had no one around me to teach me the right way to go about it until I joined church and began to meet the right people.

Q: Do you think that your criminal and abuse history has hindered you in any way?

A: Of course, they both have immensely. It's hard to maintain a relationship when you do trust and altogether hate men, as I did in my past. Yet, I felt that I needed a man for my son's stability. Nothing was further from the truth, but it took me down a horrible path. Always the issues of my past made me sabotage the good relationships and hang on too long to the bad ones. My criminal history affects me even to this day. Some people think I shouldn't be so open about it, but it is a part of nothing but my testimony now. It was something I've done and that I have to answer for even now. It hinders my movement. Sometimes, it hinders my financial progress, but by the same token, it has taught me accountability. It has shown me the millions of people that are often forgotten about that need God and need hope too.

Q: You have an interesting theory about your criminal recovery and today's jail system. Please share it with us.

A: Well, I feel like I recovered because I was never thrown in the prison system. You tell me. How can putting you in a community of criminals teach you how not to be a criminal? That doesn't even make common sense. LOL! You are taking me off the streets so I won't hurt society and have thus created a new society of felons: drug dealers, murders, thieves, robbers, rapists, tax evaders, traffickers, pimps, prostitutes, embezzlers and more. The guards talk down to them and treat them in sub-human fashions. Their only friends are gang members and other law-breakers. You put a person there for three or four years. Then you wonder why they are back within a few months. How silly is that?

I'm not an expert at anything, but I know a little about human nature. I changed because I had pastors who believed in me. I had people who sat down and taught me how to write grants, start businesses, make money the legal way. I had people who instead of calling me out of my name and treating me like a dog, loved me. LOVE always has been and always will be the answer. When I met Rachelle Rheams, my life changed. She went to church. She prayed. She was successful and single. She was what I imagined life could have been like, but was unsure it existed. I saw something that I could have and my life changed permanently. No jail system on earth could do that.

Q: Last question, Lacresha. I could do this all evening, but I won't. Do you believe your honesty about yourself has or will hurt you more than help you? I am almost afraid to put it on my blog because I know some people can be judgmental.

A: Honestly, Kim, we both know that there are about six people who are going to be jumping for joy at the opportunity to twist this interview. I don't care what they think or what they do. I didn't get as far as I have because I was easily deterred. I've gotten here on faith alone. Running a business, some people ask questions, and it's within their rights to do. They have a choice about where they'll spend their money. I don't begrudge anyone of their choices. They are free to make them, as I'm free to make mine. But, several people have thought they could deter me. Some speak against what I do everyday, but they are entitled also to their opinions. I believe that what God has appointed to be for me will be mine.

I'm not sure if you knew this, but I started Living Waters with $100 and no stable income. My doctor had given me only months to live, partly because I couldn't afford my medicine. God promised He'd work a miracle and He did. People have been saying it won't work since, but it continues to work because it's not a natural thing. It's a God-thing. It works because I love. It works because I put everything I am into it. Recently, I stepped down as President of the company and gave it wholly to my husband who loves and cares and puts his whole self into it. I've since started Christian Consulting Company. It, too, will work.

So, in answer to that question, I don't care if some people decide they'd rather not deal with me. I don't hold that against them. I already know there are plenty who will no matter how many crazy forums are started, no matter who dislikes me. I love people. I choose to love. That won't change over gossip, lies or anything else. I've been wrong and I don't judge those who are wrong right now. Integrity builds a solid foundation and for the first time in my life, I can say that the last years of my life have been full of integrity.

As you can see, this interview was a very in-depth and very emotional interview. I know that this is only the beginning for this woman. She is a light to all people. I didn't expect the candid answers I got. No one tells it like it is anymore. Most people are more concerned with being politically correct. I salute you, Lacresha. Godspeed to you!

A Group for Women

For the past three months, our group, Women Who Win by Wailing, has been growing. We are a prayer group that focuses on healing emotionally and physically. We pray three days a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Sometimes we pray from 15 minutes up to an hour and a half. It's all live, on the phone.

Inspiration come from many things, the least of which is children. When I look at my son and then this world, it sometimes terrifies me to know that old fashioned ideas and ways are dying out. Will he grow up and actually take to his chosen's father before marrying her? Will she have a father? Things are changing so quickly. What does this have to do with books?

Books preserve history. They teach lessons that are sometimes hard to explain otherwise. Books teach values, strengthens character and much more.
